The workshop
This jewellery workshop is extremely well equipped and has six bench spaces.
It is based in the heart of West Cork just outside the village of Leap, is easy to find but numbers are limited so please phone first for availability and directions.
Classes
The classes are run on different mornings each week from 10am till 1pm usually during school term time. One to one tuition is also available on other days, groups or special occasions are also catered for, please phone for details.
TY students are very welcome to come and have a taste of an unusual and rewarding career prospect. Gift vouchers for a classes are also available.
The cost of a class is €60 and lasts 3hrs.
All tools and materials are supplied, copper and brass are free. If students would like to work in silver this can be purchased in the class. These classes are open to complete beginners and above. This is a good starting platform for anyone looking for a career in the jewellery trade or applying for a college course needing to add work to a mixed arts portfolio. Some past pupils have moved on to St Johns College in Cork and are now self employed and running their own jewellery making businesses. It's a lucrative and enjoyable subject with many facets.
What you will learn
You will be taught a whole variety of techniques. How to make rings, bracelets, earrings, brooches and pendants. You will be taught how to silver solder, bend, form, cut and fabricate metal. The classes will include some stone setting, texturing, hammering, forming and polishing metals. You will be shown how to pattern the surface of metal and make beads and wire. You will be shown the fundamentals of different kinds of casting in cuttlefish, sand and lost wax. Students can also experiment with repousse, chasing, bangle making and using anticlastic raising techniques. Students are encouraged to bring along any ideas and designs that they may have. Above all you will have an exciting and rewarding time, learning to make jewellery.
